What to Know About The Delta Variant

States are seeing rising COVID-19 cases at a rate not seen since this past winter. The culprit of rising cases is a strain of the original SARS-CoV-2 virus known as the Delta Variant. First identified in India, this mutation is now the most dominant strain of the virus in the United States.

HOW CONTAGIOUS IS THE DELTA VARIANT?

Statistics indicate that Delta is nearly twice as transmissible as the original strain of SARS-CoV-2. Yale Medicine epidemiologist F. Perry Wilson, MD notes, “in a completely unmitigated environment —where no one is vaccinated or wearing masks—it’s estimated that the average person infected with the original coronavirus strain will infect 2.5 other people. In the same environment, Delta would spread from one person to maybe 3.5 or 4 other people.”

WHO IS MOST AT RISK OF INFECTION?

People who remain unvaccinated or are not fully vaccinated are most at risk.

There is a direct correlation between states with low vaccination percentages and increasing case numbers and hospitalizations.

WILL THE COVID VACCINE PROTECT ME FROM THE DELTA VARIANT?

All currently available vaccines from Moderna, Pfizer, and Johnson & Johnson are effective against hospitalizations from COVID-19. There is, however, a slight chance that a fully vaccinated person will experience an asymptomatic or mild case of COVID-19.

Individuals who are fully vaccinated yet still became reinfected with COVID-19 are known as breakthrough cases. As of July 22nd, there have been 65,000 known breakthrough cases among 160 million fully vaccinated individuals. These statistics translate to a 0.04% rate of fully vaccinated individuals being breakthrough cases.

DO I NEED TO GET TESTED?

Since fully vaccinated individuals are still at risk of being Delta variant carriers, it’s essential to get tested before certain situations. These instances can include getting tested before a vacation, seeing a large group of friends or family, and/or attending large gatherings (i.e., concerts or conferences).
