This test is usually performed as part of a panel of tests, such as a comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP) or a hepatic panel. Because it is nonspecific and from many tissues, an abnormal level necessitates interpretation considering clinical factors and additional testing as may be appropriate to identify the source. Higher levels may be due to numerous conditions ranging from physiologic (eg, bone growth in children) to pathologic conditions primarily involving primarily liver or bone, including malignancy (thus a valuable tumor marker).
