Amylase – Cedar Park, TX
Amylase is a digestive enzyme primarily made in the pancreas and salivary glands. Its main role is the digestion of carbohydrates down to the constituent monosaccharides. Amylase exists in several isoforms, the two most common being the ‘P-form’ originating from the pancreas, and the ‘S-form’ originating from the salivary glands. Elevations of blood and urinary amylase levels are commonly seen when either the pancreas or salivary glands are inflamed or damaged. Other sources of amylase, although in very small amounts, include the fallopian tubes, testes, lungs, thyroid, tonsils, breast milk, sweat, tears, and certain malignant neoplasms.
Evaluation of symptoms consistent with a pancreatic disorder (abdominal pain, fever, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, etc).
