According to an article out of The Wall Street Journal, employers are dealing with a workforce that’s ravaged by opioid drugs, notable heroin and prescription painkillers.
Impacts of usage include:
- Decreased productivity
- Increased turnover
- Financial losses
- Increases in worksite accidents
- Difficulty hiring due to a high volume of pre-employment drug testing failures
- More theft
- Job performance
Although Quest Diagnostics’ research showed an overall decrease in drug testing positivity from 2003 to 2013, it increased for some opioids and almost tripled for hydromorphone, also callec Dilaudid, and almost doubled for hydrocodone, sold as Vicodin. Heroin usage also had a 82% increase from 2010 and 2013.
