Covid-19 & The Holidays: How to Gather Safely

by | Dec 24, 2023 | Uncategorized

The holiday season is packed with social events, traveling, and family get-togethers. Everyone can take steps to slow and prevent the spread of COVID-19 this winter. This guide explains what you need to know about traveling, gatherings, holiday COVID-19 testing, and more.

In-Person Gatherings

The CDC offers guidelines for both fully vaccinated individuals and unvaccinated people. Keep reading for information about social distancing, testing, and other safety precautions.

Get Tested for Active COVID-19 Infection

Getting tested for COVID-19 is a wise idea if you have symptoms yourself, even if you are fully vaccinated. Also, consider testing if you’ve been in close contact with people who have COVID-19 or exhibit symptoms.

Those without full vaccination status should get a viral test one to three days before their trips. Viral testing options include same-day antigen testing and rapid viral testing. Lab-based viral testing takes two to three days for results, but it fits travel and pre-surgery testing requirements.

Wear a Mask and Social Distance

If you are not fully vaccinated, the CDC stresses the importance of wearing a well-fitting mask over the nose and mouth. This is also essential for those not yet eligible for vaccination, including younger children. Those under two years old should not wear masks. Meanwhile, the CDC recommends delaying travel if you are not yet completely vaccinated.

Everyone, including those with full vaccination status, should still wear masks and observe social distancing in certain situations. The CDC also strongly suggests masking up in public indoor areas if you live in areas with moderate to high transmission rates.

Social distancing is also vital to your health and safety. When you’re considering social gatherings, follow some optimal practices:

  • Remain at least six feet away from other people.
  • Steer clear of crowded and poorly ventilated areas.
  • Plan gatherings outdoors whenever possible.
  • Wear masks while using public transportation, including planes, buses, and trains.
  • Wash your hands regularly or use hand sanitizers containing at least 60% alcohol.
  • Don’t attend or host events if you are sick or have symptoms.

Get Tested Again After Any Gatherings

Once you’ve returned from travel or gatherings, it’s important to keep an eye on your health. Unvaccinated individuals should get a COVID-19 viral test three to five days after they return. They should also remain at home and self-quarantine for seven days after they’ve come back. Plan to self-quarantine for the full seven days, even if you’ve tested negative for COVID-19. Those with positive test results should continue to self-isolate and consult a medical professional.

COVID-19 travel testing recommendations are different if you’re fully vaccinated. After you return from travel, monitor yourself for COVID-19 symptoms and get tested if any develop. Be sure to know and observe additional state and local health recommendations.

Check Travel Restrictions

Your state, local, or tribal government may implement additional travel guidelines and restrictions. You may also be impacted by testing, stay-at-home orders, and quarantine requirements at your destinations. Keep in mind that these mandates may change, so be sure to stay up-to-date before, during, and after your trip. Don’t forget to check with your airline or travel provider for any additional requirements.
