Respirator Fit Testing
Expert respirator fit testing services designed to meet your industry’s specific requirements and ensure complete OSHA-compliance.
Respirator fit tests are required by OSHA every 12 months. Are you due for yours? Proper fit testing for respirators isn’t optional, it’s an OSHA mandate. Fit testing ensures your respirator properly seals to your face to protect you from exposure to hazardous substances. We deliver professional fit testing for any industry to stay compliant. Our trained professionals guide you through every step, ensuring your team has the protection they need on the job.
Medical Evaluations
A respirator medical exam is the first step in the fit testing process. Luckily, we have streamlined the process to make it quick and easy!
Here’s how it works: Employees who are required to wear respirators will complete a confidential online questionnaire about their health and breathing. Once cleared, employees will receive a medical clearance certificate. This will allow them to move forward with the respirator fit test. If additional evaluation is needed, we can help arrange follow-up.
*Medical Evaluations are not offered at all locations. Please check with your local ARCpoint to discuss scheduling your medical evaluation.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a respirator fit test?
Your Subtitle Goes Here
A respirator fit test is an OSHA-required evaluation that ensures a respirator properly seals to your face for adequate protection against airborne hazards. During the test, you’ll perform seven exercises (breathing, head movements, talking, bending) while wearing the respirator. The test verifies that no contaminated air leaks into your breathing zone through gaps in the seal.
How often is respirator fit testing required?
Your Subtitle Goes Here
OSHA requires annual fit testing at minimum. Additional testing is needed when: changing respirator models or sizes, experiencing significant weight change (±10 pounds), undergoing facial changes (dental work, surgery), or when poor fit is observed. Some industries require more frequent testing—healthcare during outbreaks or high-risk environments may test semi-annually. Medical clearance must always precede fit testing.
What happens if an employee fails the fit test?
Your Subtitle Goes Here
The employee should be fit tested with another type/model/size respirator or the employer should provide a loose fitting respirator to ensure the employee can perform the duties as assigned if re-assignment is not possible.
How to prepare for a respirator fit test?
Your Subtitle Goes Here
Be clean-shaven where the respirator seals—no facial hair or stubble allowed. Avoid eating, drinking (except water), smoking, or gum for 30 minutes before testing. Bring your safety glasses, hard hat, or other PPE normally worn with respirators. Ensure you’re healthy (no congestion or respiratory illness) and have completed medical clearance. Wear typical work clothing and bring any personally-assigned respirators if applicable.
Who needs a respirator fit test?
Your Subtitle Goes Here
Anyone required to wear a tight-fitting respirator for workplace protection must be fit tested per OSHA standards. This includes workers in healthcare (N95s), construction (silica/asbestos protection), manufacturing (chemical vapors), emergency response (SCBAs), laboratories, agriculture, and any industry with mandatory respiratory protection. Loose-fitting respirators (PAPRs with hoods) don’t require fit testing.
