What is a Normal Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) Result?

by | Apr 23, 2025 | Health & Wellness

Blood tests are an important tool that provides clues about your body’s overall functioning. One of the most commonly prescribed blood tests is the comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP) test. In this guide, we take a closer look at the CMP, what it reveals about your blood chemistry, and what is considered a normal test result.

What is a Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) Test?

complete metabolic panel is a group of tests that evaluate your metabolic health. Performed as a single blood test, a CMP measures 14 different chemicals in the blood to assess your body’s metabolism and the health and functioning of the liver and kidneys.

CMP tests can also provide information about your body’s fluid balance, electrolyte levels, blood protein, and blood sugar levels.

To obtain a CMP test, you will need to provide a blood sample at a laboratory or your provider’s office. Test results may take a few days, and once they are back, your healthcare provider can help you interpret the numbers.

A normal CMP result indicates that the chemicals and enzymes tested are within a healthy range. This could further indicate there is a normal fluid-electrolyte balance and your body’s metabolism and key organs such as the liver and kidneys are functioning as expected.

Abnormal comprehensive metabolism panel test results might indicate a problem, such as liver disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes.

Importance of CMP in Health Assessment

A CMP is an important screening tool. The test is sometimes ordered as part of your routine physical to assess your overall health and identify potential health problems in their early stages.

The test can also be used as a diagnostic tool if you are showing general symptoms such as fatigue or if your provider suspects your symptoms might indicate a problem with your liver, kidney, or metabolism.

In some cases, a CMP can be used as a monitoring tool to observe your body’s response to treatments known to impact kidney or liver function.

Additional testing is often recommended if previous CMP tests show anything outside the range of normal CMP levels.

Key Components of a CMP

CMP labs comprise 14 tests that can be grouped into five major components. Your comprehensive metabolic panel test report will list the name of each blood test, the test results, the unit of measurement used, and a reference range. A normal CMP result is any value that falls within the reference range. Numbers outside the reference range are considered abnormal and are usually flagged.

Here are the CMP normal values (reference range) for each test according to the National Library of Medicine’s A.D.A.M. Medical Encyclopedia:

  1. Kidney function tests (KFTs)
  • Urea nitrogen (BUN): 6 to 20 mg/dL
  • Creatinine: 0.6 to 1.3 mg/dL
  1. Electrolyte tests
  • Sodium: 135 to 145 mEq/L
  • Potassium: 3.7 to 5.2 mEq/L
  • Carbon dioxide: 23 to 29 mEq/L
  • Chloride: 96 to 106 mEq/L
  1. Liver function tests (LFTs)
  • Alkaline phosphatase (ALP): 20 to 130 U/L
  • Alanine transaminase (ALT): 4 to 36 U/L
  • Aspartate aminotransferase (AST): 8 to 33 U/L
  • Albumin: 3.4 to 5.4 g/dL
  • Bilirubin: 96 to 106 mEq/L
  • Total protein: 6.0 to 8.3 g/dL
  1. Blood glucose: 70 to 100 mg/dL
  2. Calcium levels: 8.5 to 10.2 mg/dL

CMP normal values might appear different if your laboratory uses a different reference range. The test might also show different measuring units, such as µmol/L instead of mg/dL.

Always ask for more information about your test results, including what is considered normal CMP levels and what should warrant further investigation. Most importantly, keep track of your numbers. Even when levels are within the normal range but are on a certain trend (such as increasing calcium levels), mention this to your doctor.
