Here are some of the most important things to know about the main differences between DOT exams and regular physicals and what to expect if the position you are considering requires a DOT exam.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-a-dot-exam-nbsp\"><strong>What Is a DOT Exam?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A DOT exam is a specialized type of physical exam that is used to rule out medical conditions or other health concerns that have the potential to make operating a large commercial vehicle unsafe. With this in mind, these exams focus more heavily on the details of specific aspects of your health that are most relevant to your ability to perform specific tasks that are relevant to your potential position. You will likely need a DOT physical every 1-2 years if your job (or any other reason) meets any of the requirements for obtaining a CDL, including:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Driving a vehicle above a certain weight (includes cargo and varies by state)\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Driving a vehicle with more passengers than the maximum that can be safely managed with a regular driver&#8217;s license (varies by state)\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Driving a vehicle that transports any type of hazardous materials\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While they include many of the same elements that make up regular physicals, DOT exams look much more closely at how the information obtained affects your ability to safely operate a commercial vehicle. These exams involve using a variety of tests and other procedures to determine how well various aspects of your body are working, identify signs of potential concerns, and provide recommendations for continuing to manage known conditions.
