The Process of Elimination: The Path of Food Sensitivity

by | Dec 24, 2023 | Uncategorized

Food sensitivity occurs when the body is introduced to a specific food that causes an immune reaction. This normally takes place in the digestive system and is usually due to problems with digestive enzymes or sensitivities to food additives. Symptoms include bloating, abdominal pain, headaches, heartburn, and joint pain.

Unlike allergies, food sensitivity symptoms are not life-threatening and can occur either within minutes or up to several days. If your symptoms persist and you’re not exhibiting a severe allergic reaction, it may be time to get a food sensitivity test. Proper identification of the food sensitivity can send you down the path to a diagnosis, leading to the finish line where answers await.

To test for food sensitivity, the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test exposes blood to a panel of foods and food components to measure the amount of IgG, IgG4, and IgA antibodies that bind to each food or component. The test gives a quantifiable amount to show how sensitive you, if at all, are to certain foods. ELISA testing is a widely-used method to help pinpoint food sensitivities in illnesses such as IBS, IBD, and many more.
