Mask Fit Testing – without OSHA Exam – Pittsburgh, PA
Qualitative Mask Fit Testing is a method used to evaluate the seal of a respirator on a wearer’s face using a pass/fail assessment based on the detection of a test agent. This method relies on the user’s sensory response (taste or smell) to substances such as saccharin (sweet taste) or Bitrex (bitter taste). The test is typically conducted in a hood that surrounds the head and shoulders of the individual wearing the respirator. Materials needed include the fit test hood, nebulizer, test solution, sensitivity solution, and the chosen respirator. Fit testing must be conducted before initial use of the respirator, whenever a different make, model, or size is used, and at least annually thereafter. The entire process generally takes 15–20 minutes per person, including a sensitivity screening and the actual fit test.
